MGR Mountain Gorilla Refuge
About Us

Dedicated to the Survival of Mountain Gorillas

Mountain Gorilla Refuge is a conservation organization dedicated to protecting, preserving, rescuing, and supporting gorillas – including mountain gorillas and silverbacks – through habitat protection, anti-poaching efforts, community engagement, and global partnerships.

Our Story

Born from Urgency, Built on Hope

Mountain Gorilla Refuge was founded in response to the alarming decline in mountain gorilla populations. What began as a small team of passionate conservationists working in the Virunga Mountains has grown into an international organization with projects across gorilla habitats in East and Central Africa.

We believe that saving gorillas requires more than protecting individual animals – it means restoring forests, empowering communities, strengthening laws, and building a global movement. Our approach is holistic, science-driven, and deeply rooted in the communities who share the land with these great apes.

Today, we work alongside governments, international NGOs, research institutions, and – most importantly – local communities to create lasting change. Every program we run is designed to be sustainable, measurable, and aligned with the needs of both gorillas and people.

Our Mission

What Drives Us Every Day

To protect and preserve gorillas and their natural habitats through conservation action, community engagement, rescue support, education, research, and partnerships.

Our Vision

What We Envision for Tomorrow

A world where gorillas are safe, protected, and able to thrive in healthy forests for generations to come.

What We Stand For

Our Core Values

CF

Conservation First

Every decision we make is guided by what is best for gorillas and their habitats. Science, data, and the welfare of these animals drive our strategy.

CP

Community Partnership

Conservation only works when communities thrive. We partner with local people as allies, not obstacles, in protecting wildlife.

TA

Transparency & Accountability

We are stewards of donor funds and public trust. 98% of every dollar goes directly to field conservation. We report openly on our impact.

ST

Sustainability

We build programs designed to last – creating systems of protection that continue long after any single intervention.

Our Team

The People Behind the Mission

Our team brings together conservation biologists, veterinarians, community organizers, researchers, and passionate advocates – all united by a deep commitment to protecting gorillas.
